towel racks and self-portraits

Hong Kong Self-Portrait

I haven’t published a self-portrait lately, maybe I’m not feeling overtly vain. This was taken in the bathroom of my Hong Kong hotel room, on a recent marketing trip to fragrant harbour (Hong Kong – translated). Why do I take self-portraits in Hong Kong hotel rooms? Maybe the same reason people have gratuitous sex (or masturbate) while in their secret rented domiciles. I could investigate the phenomenon, but it could get messy.

I look bad in photos, no matter who takes them.

I wonder if that’s a common complaint among photographers? I happen to think I look horrible in pictures, no matter who takes them (the professional photos, btw, have always been the worst because they look nothing like me). Outside of the fact that I desperately wanted a camera when I was about 5 years old, took a photo class in high school without a camera (and got kicked out because I didn’t have a camera and couldn’t afford one), I’ve always been the one behind the camera because it meant no one would be taking photos of me. Cos I’m smart that way. :D

Right, then. Now that I’ve babbled all about me…

I like this, Stevo. The serious look, the white of your shirt and eye, and the lines all combine to make a fab photo.

Robyn: I would agree. I have never been comfortable in front of the camera. Some people are, not moi. I look nasty in photos, very goofy, unlike who I am. I try to stay in the shadows. There’s a six year period from the 90s where there are no photos of me, save a Driver’s license image.

    Wanda: You got taste.

You give sex as a gratuity? Most people just leave a small monetary tip for the housekeeping staff.

  5. Ahhh, but Jacks–Stevo’s a teacher. He has no money.

I like this picture, Stevo–it reminds me of Six Feet Under.

LFC: I don’t know whether to be complimented or shutter for that. Thank you, either way.

Damn. Stevo. You look hunky! I love the pensive glare. You almost look like a serial killer, but serial killers usually look like the guy next door, not like a moody, broody, deliciously gorgeous man.

Oh, and tell your wife, it’s just adoration (for your photograph) from afar. For all I know, you look like a ordinary Joe in real life.

Hong Kong translates as ‘fragrant harbor’? I love that!

    Fab picture.

You look like the hunky professor right before he meets Dracula. I don’t know too many women, who wouldn’t open the window, when that guy knocks.

Au contraire monsieur. I think you are quite photogenic.

I don’t really like having my picture taken either, even though I model on a regular basis. We are always our own worst critiques.

I’ve enjoyed all your self-portraits, and I think it’s interesting that they all portray a very different ‘you’. It would be interesting to see you post several of them together, so we could make some comparisons. Keep shutterbuggin’!

  15. Stevo says:

Carrie: I think candid photos are the best. Posed photos look so, well, posed. That’s a great idea, a Stevo self-portrait retrospective.
