Some of my work colleagues who are expats in Saigon decided that, when in Rome, live like the Romans. Well, the family all got scooters, and within six months the wife got into a pretty bad accident. Fortunately, she wasn't critically hurt, although she was seriously hurt and recovered. Personally, I HATE them. There's nothing worse than sitting in a pack of 100 scooter drivers sucking back on exhaust fumes. And, for some weird reason, everyone smokes and drives, which means you're inhaling exhaust fumes and second-hand smoke. It's horrid. I don't drive a scooter and I wish the government would ban them in Taiwan. It sometimes makes me wonder how people my age and older survived childhood without all those regulations.
