After destroying the eardrums and the will to live of countless music aficionados, Canada’s Celine Dion has done her best to anger an entire city.
Dion was scheduled to headline the second Concert on the Common, at an outdoor venue in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada). Tickets were to go on sale next week for the August 2008 show.
Dion’s handlers have stated that the park is, “not appropriate” for the ultra-thin screecher’s elaborate show. editor’s note: Not appropriate because parks have grass, thin vegetation that could block out the visage of the wafer-thin Quebec shrieker.
The Halifax Common has hosted events by both the Pope, and The Rolling Stones. Is Ms Dion telling the world: a) She is better than The Stones, b) More important than the Pope? I believe The Beatles once made a ill-informed statement about Jesus, but, they weren’t pixie-like divas with their own Vegas show.
People of Halifax: Count yourselves lucky. During her performance dogs would have barked ferociously at her shrill song stylings, and windows across the city would have shattered. Your local emergency room lack the staff to deal with the bleeding eardrums of 50,000 angry concert goers.
Don’t worry Halifaxtonians, you only have to turn on an easy listening station to get a Celine fix. That damn Titanic song is still in rotation. It’s probably safer for you, and all of Nova Scotia, if she stays away.
From CBC News
…Gillett Entertainment Group said the concert, scheduled for August, was cancelled because the park was “not appropriate” for Dion’s elaborate show.
The company went on to say the venue “would not satisfy the best interests” of Dion’s fans.
The singer was to be the big draw for the second Concert on the Common.
“Naturally, we are disappointed,” Halifax Mayor Peter Kelly said in a statement.
“It is unfortunate, but that sometimes is the nature of the entertainment business. We are not always privy to the reasoning behind the decisions of entertainers or promoters not to proceed with their plans.”
… On a cold and rainy night last fall, about 50,000 fans turned out to hear the British rockers in a one-day music festival which included performers Alice Cooper, Kanye West and Sloan.Kelly said the city is not giving up on finding another headliner.
He said Halifax has one of the best outdoor concert venues in Canada and there are proposals for other shows next summer.
Council had agreed to spend up to $150,000 on the Dion event.
