good enough for the stones, but not celine

dion.jpg

After destroying the eardrums and the will to live of countless music aficionados, Canada’s Celine Dion has done her best to anger an entire city.

Dion was scheduled to headline the second Concert on the Common, at an outdoor venue in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada). Tickets were to go on sale next week for the August 2008 show.

Dion’s handlers have stated that the park is, “not appropriate” for the ultra-thin screecher’s elaborate show. editor’s note: Not appropriate because parks have grass, thin vegetation that could block out the visage of the wafer-thin Quebec shrieker.

The Halifax Common has hosted events by both the Pope, and The Rolling Stones. Is Ms Dion telling the world: a) She is better than The Stones, b) More important than the Pope? I believe The Beatles once made a ill-informed statement about Jesus, but, they weren’t pixie-like divas with their own Vegas show.

People of Halifax: Count yourselves lucky. During her performance dogs would have barked ferociously at her shrill song stylings, and windows across the city would have shattered. Your local emergency room lack the staff to deal with the bleeding eardrums of 50,000 angry concert goers.

Don’t worry Halifaxtonians, you only have to turn on an easy listening station to get a Celine fix. That damn Titanic song is still in rotation. It’s probably safer for you, and all of Nova Scotia, if she stays away.

From CBC News

…Gillett Entertainment Group said the concert, scheduled for August, was cancelled because the park was “not appropriate” for Dion’s elaborate show.

The company went on to say the venue “would not satisfy the best interests” of Dion’s fans.

The singer was to be the big draw for the second Concert on the Common.

“Naturally, we are disappointed,” Halifax Mayor Peter Kelly said in a statement.

“It is unfortunate, but that sometimes is the nature of the entertainment business. We are not always privy to the reasoning behind the decisions of entertainers or promoters not to proceed with their plans.”

… On a cold and rainy night last fall, about 50,000 fans turned out to hear the British rockers in a one-day music festival which included performers Alice Cooper, Kanye West and Sloan.Kelly said the city is not giving up on finding another headliner.

He said Halifax has one of the best outdoor concert venues in Canada and there are proposals for other shows next summer.

Council had agreed to spend up to $150,000 on the Dion event.

my top 5 albums

Following the example of Jay Nova and his 5 Favorite albums meme. In no particular order…

Never Mind the Bollocks – The Sex Pistols

While in high school I was introduced to a little thing called punk rock. The in-you-face, under-produced, utter rawness of this album makes it a favourite of mine. It hasn’t aged as badly as you’d expect after 30 years. Johnny Rotten taunts listeners with his vocals and tells the world of the woes of England’s youth. The Pistols were a brief blip on the musical landscape, but left a lasting impression with God Save the Queen and Anarchy in the UK.

Collision Course – Jay Z and Linkin Park

The mash-up phenomenon paired this unlikely combination. Jay Z’s crisp flows combined with the unrefined anger of Linkin Park makes this EP a treat. I’m not a fan of Linkin Park, and frankly like Jay Z better on this project, backed up by electric guitars, than I do on his solo efforts. The version of Encore on this EP is far better than Jay Z’s over-produced original from The Black Album. The duo’s mash-up of 99 Problems is a cacophonic anthem of injustice.

Self-titled (3) 1978 – Peter Gabriel

Mr. Gabriel has a number of self-titled releases. This one is notable for the photo of his melting face on the cover. With classics like I Don’t Remember, Games Without Frontiers, and Biko, the album never gets stale. The guitar riffs on And Through the Wire are notable. My favourite track is Family Snapshot, the chronicle of an assassin, thinking of his parents, while waiting for his kill.

Everything I Long For – Hayden

Toronto-based singer/songwriter Hayden Dresser recorded most of this album in his bedroom. The melodic and melancholy songs cut to the bone of emotion. This recording shows what a talented artist with limited resources can do. The hidden tracks are among the funniest things I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.

I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love – My Chemical Romance

MCR is one of the few new bands I like. This album blew me away the first time I listened to it. The fury and resonance of these newcomers makes me feel that music isn’t yet dead. is a song that never fails to make shivers run down my spine.

All these albums are on a special playlist on my iPod and what I consider workout songs for the gym.

Take a look at amuirin’s top 5 albums.
