A Thai Soldier stands guard at the Grand Palace in Bangkok, overseeing the arriving mourners. Princess Galyani Vadhana, sister of Thailand’s King Bhumibol, died after a long battle with cancer, January 2, 2008. The King declared 100 days of national mourning for the princess, who was deeply respected by Thai citizens for her work in arts and music, sports, education, and social welfare.
Each day, thousands of mourning Thais, dressed in black, descended on the Bangkok’s Grand Palace to pay their respects. Memorials and shrines to the princess were set up around the country.
Captured: February 2, 2008.

More to the point of the post, the Thai’s LOVE LOVE LOVE their royal family and when the king goes, its gonna throw the whole country into a deep depression. I was there when he got sick and over 100,000 people signed his “get well” book!

How did you capture this peek? He really seems to have just for an instant taken a quick look.
Does the king have more of a figurehead role or is he a true ruler?

yb: The king is a figurehead, but revered by the Thai people. He has no real power, but a lot of influence. It became known he supported one of the many coups during the 90s and it gained popular support. Others he has disapproved of and they failed. Hail to the King.
