towel racks and self-portraits

Hong Kong Self-Portrait

I haven’t published a self-portrait lately, maybe I’m not feeling overtly vain. This was taken in the bathroom of my Hong Kong hotel room, on a recent marketing trip to fragrant harbour (Hong Kong - translated). Why do I take self-portraits in Hong Kong hotel rooms? Maybe the same reason people have gratuitous sex (or masturbate) while in their secret rented domiciles. I could investigate the phenomenon, but it could get messy.

I look bad in photos, no matter who takes them.

outdoor haircut

At the night market you can buy sheets and other assorted dongxi, cheap radios, barbecued meat on a stick, or get a haircut under the stars.

sunday morning mosque

hk-mosque

The Kowloon Mosque and Islamic Association seems out of place among the electronic shops, tailors, and hostels of The Golden Mile, on Nathan Road (Hong Kong). The dome and minaret dominate their own little piece of skyline, backing onto the large green space of Kowloon Park. It is an interesting site to see in the morning hours, before the sky fills with haze.

no school: typhoons and email

typhoon fengshen

Typhoon Fengshen rolled through Shenzhen yesterday. School was canceled city-wide, officials anticipating damage from the killer storm. Dorm students were confined to their quarters, many not pleased. Six to a room and a raging typhoon do not happy campers make.

Typhoon Fengshen, named by China and meaning God of Wind, left a swath of destruction across Asia. In the Philippines 598 people were reported dead and 700 missing from the torrential rain, flooding, winds and associated mudslides.

The typhoon made landfall in Shenzhen, China at approximately 2 pm (GMT +8) June 25, while this reporter had an afternoon nap. While his colleagues indulged in a decadent, no-school-today feast, The Stevo diligently answered email and continued with HR work. Being the Laoban often sucks.

It’s not easy to photograph rain. The above image is not my best work. In my defense, the image was snapped during a brief respite from email correspondence.

What is a Typhoon? See my informative piece on Associated Content.

time magazine agrees with the stevo

Quite some time ago I made a comment regarding a popular blog and the degradation of culture - leading to the end of the world. No, I don’t remember who’s blog it was on. One of the Usual Suspects, most likely.

Time Magazine agrees with me. It’s good to know I am still at the forefront of original and ingenious thought.

With thanks to the LFC.

night balloons

night shooting in China

The owner of the outdoor shooting gallery at a Shenzhen (China) night market fills balloons to replace the ones shot by patrons. One Yuan gets would-be sharpshooters 10 plastic pellets, to be fired from a plastic AK assault rifle.

I recommend the Canon EF 50 mm f/1.4 USM lens. It’s a great piece of gear for night work.
